After our harrowing day, we decided to head off for a drink and a meal.
And for a very exciting event - not to be missed - we went to see the closing of the altar panels at St Marys Basilica. In the photos you can see how ornate and highly decorated this important Basilica is. I particularly liked the colors used in the walls and the starry ceiling.
We had been told that the side panels would be closed at 5.45pm so we bought tickets: as non-Catholics we couldn't say we were entering the church to pray and enter for free!
We spent some time trying to identify the panel's pictures with the help of a brochure. Jude and I found our experience as Sunday school teachers didn't appear to be of much use!
There was a lot of mysterious banging and clanging which appeared to be coming from behind the altar. However it had nothing to do with the altar at all, as we discovered when a petite nun came with a large stick and simply shut them!
So, desperate for a drink we wandered around lots of lanes, came across a few bars filled with young people a fraction of our age and finally found one that was more in keeping with our age.
After some reviving drinks it was off to the Market to sample their wares. The pictures tell it all!
A soup bar, prunes and bacon wrapped around the local cheese, pierogi (Polish dumplings) huge sausages on slabs of sourdough bread with garlic butter and fried onions.........and lots more.
We were so full we had to resist the delights of the chocolate stall: apples covered in chocolate, pears covered in chocolate, bananas covered in chocolate, and even kebabs of fruit covered in chocolate. At least the fruit bit was healthy!
Graz had to use her charm and her best Polish on the local bar owner to get some wine for us to drink in the market.
As you can see. ...a good time had by all,
Your ever-increasing-in-size correspondent
Dianne
