Sadly it is time to leave Lisbon. I would happily spend a few more days here, but time is limited.
The local coffee shop was standing room only today. Having waited my turn the hard part was choosing the pastry. Finishing, I saw a taxi dropping a customer, so I jumped for it. Half a km later I realised I hadn't paid. Turn around, pay the man 1.50. It was the principle!
Hertz kindly upgraded me to a Citroen C3, nice, but after being hit 72 euros in Madrid I thought I was due.
An easy trip down the A2 to Evora. Staying out of the way of maniacs in German cars was the only hard part. Speed limits don't seem to apply to them!
Evora is Avila, Segovia etc. rolled into one. A longer aqueduct, but not as impressive. Apparently you can walk 8km of it!. Longer walls, but not as high. Again there are kms of them. It think it does trump all the others for the sheer size of the enclosed town. There are about 10,000 people inside the walls! It has more narrow cobbled lanes that carry traffic than anywhere I have been. The drive in had so many tight turns I was very pleased the car was no bigger! There seems to be many police on bicycles - very smart. On my walks there were many occasions when I had to find the nearest doorway to allow a car through. Another local speciality seems to be cork. You can buy just about anything made from cork. There is one particularly attractive little chapel that is almost completely tiled inside, currently hosting a display of wedding gowns?
Having trudged the town for about 5 hours I think I have had enough of old walled towns.
I seem to have put my back out. I woke up sore and now it is very stiff. Here's hoping enough wine for dinner will do the trick ( sadly not! )
